Hand Up Grant (HUG) helps local CNA student
At a low time in her life, Jennifer Garrett said she needed a fairy godmother. She got one. Actually, she got 700 fairy godmothers!
Garrett said she was bless by the non-profit organization in Manhattan known as Fairy Godmothers. This organization is women helping women in this area. In Garrett’s case, she was awarded a Hand Up Grant that is helping her accomplish her goal to become a registered nurse.
"This has been HUGE in my life,” Garrett said. "I can’t wait to be a Fairy Godmother and give back by helping others.”
Garrett was the first recipient to receive the HUG from the Fairy Godmothers.
Air Conditioning Repair
A 32-year-old single mother receives no child support for her two 9-year-old children. She has a job making $9.35 an hour and receives $300 in food stamps. Her take-home pay is about $1,000 a month. With a tax refund last year, she bought a very used mobile home, but the air conditioning has not been working. She applied for a Community Development Block Grant with the City of MHK Housing Rehab Department. This application for the block grant was approved to have a company make the repairs. In order to have enough money for the quote, the Fairy Godmothers provided one of our grants to complete the payment for the work.
A single 26-year-old mother of a 3-month-old girl is receiving food stamps and a disability check. With diapers and baby food, her budget is tight. She is ready to go back to work but needed some dental fillings done to relieve mouth pain she has been suffering with. Fairy Godmothers helped her with a grant for dental work at Konza Dental Health Center.
Car Repairs Made
Fairy Godmothers helped a low-income senior who is on the Working Healthy Program at the Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging. She had some car repairs that were an unexpected expense. She could not pay for the repairs on her budget. She is currently looking for employment and is working with Older Kansans Employment Program.
Car Repair Assistance
A hard working 27-year-old single mother of two boys ages 5 and 7 has no child support and does not receive food stamps or housing assistance. She was receiving a Supplemental Security Income payment for mental issues until she started working part-time. Then, this payment was dropped. She also works part time doing house cleaning. Someone gave her a car, but it needed some work. Fairy Godmothers provided her with a grant for car repairs.
